Why crackers belong to Karthigai Deepam
It is a festival of lamps first. Crackers come after the lamps are lit, a quieter second Deepavali for the children: sparklers, a few flower pots and the chakkars they did not get to light in November.
What to buy
Keep the list small and bright. Sparklers and flower pots carry the evening, with a box of chakkars and one or two novelties. Many families keep a few sealed boxes back from their Deepavali order for this night.
