Crackers for Christmas and the new year at the Sivakasi price
Christmas in Tamil Nadu means midnight mass at Santhome in Mylapore and the crowds at Velankanni on the coast, and a week later Chennai sees the new year in from terraces, apartment lawns and the beach roads.

Why crackers belong to Christmas and New Year
Both nights lead up to a single moment at twelve. That makes them nights for the sky: one well-chosen cake at midnight does more than a long run of small items.
What to buy
Time it to the countdown. A repeater cake or two for midnight, a few sky shots, and sparklers to hand out the second the year turns. For Christmas morning, one garland at the gate is plenty.

Christmas and New Year questions
Can I burst crackers at midnight on 31 December?
Only where and when it is allowed. New year bursting is usually held to a short window around midnight, and the police in Chennai issue their own directions. Read the current notification before buying.
What makes a good countdown?
One repeater cake with a good number of shots, lit at twelve, and sparklers for everyone straight after. Everything else is extra.
What is the last safe date to order in December?
The middle of December. Transport slows in Christmas week, and even in a quiet week parcels to Chennai take 2 to 3 days.
