Bursting crackers in Chennai: the 2026 timings
Deepavali falls on 8 November 2026. Here is what is actually permitted in Chennai and the rest of Tamil Nadu, and where to check before you buy.
This page is a summary, not the law. The bursting window and the permitted items are re-notified every season by the Greater Chennai Police, the district police and the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, and they can differ by district. Check the current 2026 notification before Deepavali.
The two-hour window
Bursting in Tamil Nadu is normally notified for 6:00 to 7:00 AM and 7:00 to 8:00 PM on Deepavali. Outside those hours it is an offence, including on the days either side of Deepavali.
Green crackers only
Tamil Nadu permits certified green crackers alone. Look for the CSIR-NEERI green logo and the QR code printed on the box, and keep the box until you have burst everything in it.
Silence zones
No bursting within 100 metres of a hospital, school, court or place of worship, at any hour. Many streets in Chennai sit inside one without a sign.
Your gated community
Apartment complexes along OMR and in Velachery often add a rule of their own: bursting only on a marked patch of open ground, only at a set time, or not in the common areas at all. Check with your association first.
Tamil Nadu splits its Deepavali bursting into two one-hour slots, normally notified as 6:00 to 7:00 AM and 7:00 to 8:00 PM on Deepavali, one for the dawn oil bath and one after dusk, permits certified green crackers only, and the order is reissued every season.
What to buy if you are in an apartment
Certified green, silent or low noise, and safe on a balcony or a shared terrace. 8 boxes from the list that meet all three.
Ordering in time
Parcels reach Chennai in 2 to 3 days from Sivakasi, and the transport lines are at their busiest in the final week. The last Deepavali order we can promise for Tamil Nadu is 3 November. See crackers delivery in Chennai for how your parcel actually arrives. Crackers count as explosives, so they cannot travel on Chennai Metro, MTC buses or suburban trains, and no ordinary courier will take them.
Chennai cracker timings: questions people ask
What time can I burst crackers in Chennai for Deepavali 2026?
In recent seasons Tamil Nadu has notified two one-hour slots, 6:00 to 7:00 AM and 7:00 to 8:00 PM on Deepavali, two hours in all. The order is issued afresh each year, so confirm the 2026 notification before Deepavali on 8 November 2026.
Why is there a morning slot in Tamil Nadu?
Because Deepavali in a Tamil home starts before sunrise, with the oil bath, new clothes and the first crackers at the gate. The state's notification has kept an hour at dawn for that custom alongside an hour in the evening. Both are as notified, so check the current order.
Are only green crackers allowed in Chennai?
Yes, as notified in recent seasons following the Supreme Court's orders. Look for the CSIR-NEERI green logo and the QR code on the box. Every box we mark green on this site carries that certification. Confirm the current notification before you buy.
Can I burst crackers in my apartment complex?
Your association decides that as much as the state does. Complexes along OMR and in Velachery often allow one marked open area at a set time, and some keep the common areas free of crackers altogether. Find out before you order.
What is a silence zone?
The 100 metres around a hospital, nursing home, school, court or place of worship. No bursting is allowed there at any hour, and in Chennai many temple streets and hospital roads fall inside one with no sign to tell you.
Can I carry crackers on the Chennai Metro, an MTC bus or a suburban train?
No. Crackers count as explosives and cannot travel on Chennai Metro, MTC buses or suburban trains, or with an ordinary courier. That is why your parcel comes by registered road transport.
